Speaker, songwriter and composer Cindy Jordan is dedicated
to her vision of bringing awareness to the power of music and she is right on
track. "Music used with intention can make a dramatic difference in people's
lives."
In 1983, every country radio station and honky-tonk was
playing, Jose Cuervo you are a friend of mine.” This is the first song this
California
surfer girl ever wrote! The song Jose Cuervo went on to be the 1983 Country
Music song of the year in Billboard Magazine. That same year Sales for Jose
Cuervo tequila increased by the millions. “That’s the power of music.”
Cindy says that she realizes it was the spirit of the song
that made it a hit. “Little children and people who I know never even have had a
drink love my song! After all this time I believe it is because the
song expresses a happy emotion and expresses the concept of freedom. How many
times to we forget to enjoy life because we are held back or feel we don’t
deserve it? The song, Jose Cuervo kind of breaks through those barriers and
makes people smile. I have heard some great stories of how the song has affected
people’s lives.”
When Cindy was three years old Santa brought her a little
red piano and she fell in love with making music. She studied classical music
and theory with composer/concert pianist Nino Albanese. She began teaching piano
herself at age 17. Cindy taught herself to play guitar at 12 when by buying a
book of guitar chords.
Music was in her family. Her great-grandfather Alberto
Solis was a talent Scout for Irving Berlin. He traveled to
Spain
in search of Spanish music. Alberto also worked in the earliest years for RCA
Victor talking machines.
Her paternal grandmother, Opal Jordan was a honky tonk
piano player. After losing her husband in WWII she raised her four children
working in factories during the day and playing music at night. “I wrote Nobody
Cried When Mama Sang the Blues for Memo. I once saw her play for two hours
straight and the whole crowd moaned when she got up to take a break. She was
definitely one of the last of the ‘red hot mamas!’ I am her legacy.”
After her success with Jose Cuervo in 1984 Cindy married a
cowboy, moved to east Texas and
had two babies within fifteen months of each other. With her new life and family
she changed her genre of music and began writing songs for children. She created
a ministry called Kids for Kids. The choir of 35 children from rural
Texas
raised money for children's charities including St. Jude's hospital in
MemphisTennessee.
In 1998, after a series of dark events, as fate would have
it, Cindy moved to Nashville,
Tennessee. “I remember standing in my kitchen being very
depressed and having a conversation with God. ‘OK. You have me here. What am I
supposed to do now?’ I heard what I like to call the voice say, ‘Go play for the
kids at Vanderbilt.’ I argued. ‘ No its me…remember Jose Cuervo? I need a phone
number of a producer or publisher or something.’ I heard “Go to Vanderbilt and
play music for the kids.’ God’s voice comes in the form of thought. I couldn’t
get the thought out of my mind! Finally after three weeks of having this
conversation I went to volunteer to play music at Vanderbilt.”
Vanderbilt pediatrics had plenty of programs so they
decided to have Cindy play music for patients recovering from surgery. “I think
the last thing I’d want is someone to show up at my hospital room doorway,
holding a guitar and asking me if I wanted to hear a song. I found this to be
true with most of the patients. This made me confused until one night my son
came to me and asked me to play the piano so he could fall asleep. In that
moment bells and whistles went off and my purpose became crystal clear. I would
compose music to make people relax and feel better.” I felt that if I created
the music in the spirit of love, the listener’s spirit would hear it.”
Within a few short months Cindy signed a contract
to compose and produce 11 CDs for Page Music. The peaceful Journey Series, four
Christmas CDs and a 3 CD project she named New Beginnings were released
worldwide. Cynthia’s music is to the ear, as a beautiful sunset is to the eye.
It has a warm healing affect that seems to resonate with all living things.
“When I practice my piano many times animals show up outside my window and
listen. They make a wonderful audience.”
With the release of her music, Cindy began receiving
letters from all over the world. “We use your music to relieve our little girl’s
migraine headaches.” “My aunt had a more speedy recovery from her heart surgery.
I know it was your music that helped.” “I had my first full night’s sleep in two
years!” “We played your Celtic CD when we buried our son and it brought us great
comfort.”
Cindy began doing research on the power of music and was
excited to find all kinds of benefits music can bring. Cynthia’s book Butterfly
Moments, has proven to be an inspirational winner. “ The book describes my
musical journey from Jose Cuervo to composing the Peaceful Journey series. She
is currently finishing her new book, Prescription Music to be released Summer of
2006.
Cindy currently resides in San Angelo,
Texas. “I made it back to God’s country.”
She has a two-hour program on KCSA, 95.7 that plays therapeutic music for the
people of TomGreenCounty. “In my research I have
learned that the best kind of therapeutic music is instrumental, stays at a
consistent flow of 50 to 60 beats a minute and features acoustic instruments.”
Cindy’s goal is for her idea to catch on statewide and then nation wide. “If it
works anywhere it can work everywhere.”
Cindy’s mission statement is, “to heal the world with
beautiful music.” She has new products coming out all the time including a new
DVD called Journey to Wellness.
